Grow your Own Heirloom Grain, They can be popped like popcorn
Sorghum is gluten-free and an interesting alternative to the typical home-grown grain choice of corn (maize). It is an efficient use of space as it grows close together, and it tastes good.
This variety of sorghum can be popped like popcorn! The tiny seeds when popped are very white and smaller- but crunchy. They really have a great nutty flavor. White Popping Sorghum should be planted in warm soils after any danger of frost. The small cream colored round seeds should be planted at a depth of about 1/2 inch. Germination takes ten days or longer depending on growing conditions. The seedlings may need to be thinned so plants are spaced 6-8 inches apart. The plant will form many small âsuckersâ . These small suckers will likely produce a seed head, too. The sorghum plants will grow to heights of 8-10 feet or taller. The seed head is somewhat compact with fewer fibers than most broom corns, but looser than the Black Seeded or Black Kafir sorghums. Maturity varies from 100-110 days, but seed heads can be harvested at any stage of development. Typical seed heads are about 10-12 inches long. Again it has multi uses- it can be popped or used in floral arrangements (dried or fresh flower).
